For kids 10 years old and up? My mom wants me to learn spelling.
This site will give what you need.
Well I am going to be in a spelling bee soon and i have a list of words but it just seems so boring to just study them are there any exercises or games that i can play to still be learning and studying them at the same time?
study like crazy, like seriously learn about differnet prefixes and suffixes that come from different language origins and how words come together to mean different things…for example
osteokinematics-
osteo=bone (Latin)
kinematics=study of movement.
Pull apart different words and use them in sentances throughout your day. Whenever you use a word you may not have normally used see if you can sit there and spell it. If I were you I would carry around a small electronic hand held dictionary/thesaurus/encyclopedia…they sell them for like $40 or more….or just carry around asmall pocket sized dictionary at all times. When you hear words on the news or if you have a spare minute just look up words and review them over and over again until you feel like you could spell them in your sleep. Best of luck to do…and remember whenever you aren’t studying…one of you opponents probably is!!
I’m not talking about games like Grand Theft Auto where the object is killing people, or Halo where you shoot people.
I distinctly remember when I was in first grade, I would play this game and ironically enough, half of the words that were on my spelling list were in the game. The game didn’t have voice overs, so I’d have to read it all, and it helped me remember that you don’t drop the ‘y’ and add ‘ies’ for the word "toys", ect.
Yes, I feel that video games can be good fro children whether the games are educational or even an adventure or rpg game (without voice overs). As with all things related to screen time, it is fine as long as it is in moderation. An increased understanding of vocabulary, an increased understanding of other cultures, and the development of storytelling is always great for kids. (Granted, books are better, but there is nothing wrong with occasional video games) Educational games are great for when the kids are young. Adventure/rpgs are great for 8-10+.
As I’ve grown up I’ve always argued the point that some video games are educational in a way. I played a lot of games that required me to read a lot and my spelling and communication skills are more mature than of the age I am. So i ask you to think about it carefully before you answer.
In a way, it really depends on the video game, but there are definitely some out there that can challenge the brain and make you think harder while having fun at the same time so I agree with you there. Take for example games that have alot of dialogue in them, in a way that can help your vocabulary.
Yeah i’d say those kinds of games give you a little brain boost.
Help! I am not an experienced teacher and will go in the middle of the year to do a demo for a class. The principal gave me topics to choose from: n Phonics, long/u/;Math,<or>, ordering numbers; Social Studies-communities/citizenship ,wants/needs; Spelling—ing. I have been searching on the internet for some games but am clueless on how I should do this!
I only need to choose one subject area.
I teach at an elementary school. Many teachers from our school like the site http://abcteach.com/.
I know this is popular only in Canada–I used to play it at my grandma’s house in Abbotsford all the time. I haven’t seen one since I was in junior high but I now live in Florida. In case my crappy spelling didn’t help it’s a game where you shoot little wooden disks around on a large board with your fingers. There’s a hole in the center and you try to knock your opponent’s pieces off the board. Can anybody help?
Crokinole is what you are looking for. There are several websites that sell them, but I am a big fan of the hand-made boards produced by the Hilinski brothers. http://hilinski.net/woodgames/ I have one of their boards (This one is actually my board –> http://hilinski.net/woodgames/slideshow/phpslideshow.php?directory=gallery/premium¤tPic=41) Absolutely fantastic. Great craftsmanship, worth every cent. These are finely built boards for a great game. I always recommend to anyone looking to get a crokinole board to go ahead and pay up for the quality board, because if you decide that it’s not for you, the re-sale on a quality board like that means that you’ll probably get a very good return or better on your investment.
I tutor a 1st grader and she has some real trouble spelling. I make her write the words over and over again. Then I make her spell them out, repeat the spelling a couple of times, and write down the words. But nothing seems to help. She keeps making the same exact mistakes. Do you know any fun games or activities that I could play with her that will actually help her learn how to spell?
I play a game called Sparkle with my students. It may work with your 1st grader, but you would have to join in the game with her. Here is how you play:
1. Read the word out loud
2. Start spelling each letter (for example if the word is cat, she would say c, you a, etc.)
3. After the last letter, the next person says sparkle.
My students love this game, and it becomes a competition to know their spellings words.
A second idea would be to set yourself up on Spelling City (http://www.spellingcity.com/). You can put the spelling list in there and it has games for the child to do on the computer that you can sit and help her with. Again, my students really like this. It provides games and tests for the kids to do.
I hope this helps!
I cannot spell at all I can read very well. This have been my secret all my life. What online game I can play to become a better speller? If you cannot think of an olnine game what other suggestions do you have?
