I am trying to learn actionscript 3.0 and flash for the purpose of creating games. I have already been through the tutorials on lynda.com. They served as a good introduction, but I need something more thorough. I would prefer something with examples and the more examples it has, the better. Could anybody make any recommendations?

My daughter is turning 5 this Thursday, and we decided to get her a Nintendo DS as a gift. She played with one that belongs to her cousin and loved it. She is just learning to read, so some of the games that are rated E are still over her head. Any suggestions about games that would be age appropriate for her?

Since you have a computer you can do LOTS of fun things. Print out some coloring sheets with alphabet letters on them. Let them color and then talk about the sound of the letter. Print out pictures with simple 3 letter words. Make a bingo game out of letters or numbers. Each of you gets a game card, pick from a stack of pre-cut letters or numbers. Play with cheerios or M&Ms and combine it with snack time. Whoever gets bingo gets to eat the treat. Take a walk with your child and talk about the things he/she sees. Get them thinking about the how’s and whys of everything. Why is the tree green. Why do cars stop at the light…..etc. Maybe take along a pre-made book to let them write and draw what they see. Do simple math problems with popsicle sticks. Have fun with words, let them try to make rhymes, even if (and especially if) they are silly. There are lots of resources online for fun things to do. Look around and you’ll find plenty. Good luck :)

    learning to work with others
learning that learning can be fun too
learning that specific skill taught through the game itself
